Body Butter vs. Lotion: What's Really the Difference?
Not all moisturisers are created equal. We break down the science behind body butters and why they win every time for long-lasting moisture.
Walk into any pharmacy and you'll find dozens of moisturisers on the shelf — creams, lotions, gels, butters, oils. The choices are overwhelming. But when it comes to truly nourishing your skin, not all formulations are built the same.
Let's break down the key differences between body butters and regular lotions — and help you decide what your skin actually needs.
What Is a Body Lotion?
Most commercial body lotions are emulsions — a mixture of water and oil held together by an emulsifier. They typically contain 60–80% water, which is why they feel light and absorb quickly. The downside? That water evaporates within minutes, and with it, much of the moisturising effect.
To extend shelf life and improve texture, most commercial lotions also contain preservatives, synthetic fragrance, and thickeners — ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin over time.
What Is a Body Butter?
Body butters are anhydrous — meaning they contain no water at all. They're made from a blend of natural fats and oils: shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, coconut oil, and others. Without water, there's no need for heavy preservatives, and the moisturising effect is dramatically longer-lasting.
Because they're pure fat, body butters create an occlusive layer on the skin — a protective seal that slows moisture loss (called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL). This is why your skin still feels soft eight hours later.
Which One Is Right for You?
- Dry or very dry skin — body butter, without question. The richer formula provides the intense, lasting moisture dry skin needs.
- Oily or acne-prone skin — a lightweight lotion or a small amount of non-comedogenic body butter (like shea or jojoba-based).
- Normal skin — either works well; body butter after a shower, lotion for a lighter mid-day refresh.
- Sensitive skin — body butter with minimal ingredients wins. Fewer additives means fewer irritants.
The My Secret Glow Difference
Our body butters are whipped, which changes the texture from a dense solid to a light, airy cream that melts on contact with skin. This means you get all the benefits of a rich butter without the heavy, greasy feeling that puts some people off.
We use unrefined shea and cocoa butter combined with nourishing botanical oils — no water, no synthetic preservatives, no unnecessary fillers. Just what your skin actually needs.
